The Powerful Impact of Trauma
Our Framework for Trauma Treatment
Left to right: SooMi Lee-Samuel, MD, Medical Director, and Rachel Sherron, MA, LPC, RYT, Coordinator of Trauma Awareness and Clinical Yoga Specialist, Timberline Knolls, collaborate as part of an integrated multi-disciplinary treatment team to treat the whole person—body and mind, physically and emotionally.
A full two-thirds of Americans report undergoing traumatic childhood experiences. It can be a horrific identifiable event, such as sexual assault, or it can be relentless, such as ongoing parental neglect or living with an alcoholic parent. But regardless of duration or intensity, negative medical consequences can affect these individuals far into their adult years.

Recently, The Huffington Post showcased a blog that shed light on these long-term health consequences. Entitled, “Childhood Trauma Leads To Lifelong Chronic Illness — So Why Isn’t The Medical Community Helping Patients?” the author chronicled her history of early childhood trauma and subsequent physical illness later in life.
The connection between these two issues is not new. It was first documented in a 1996 study and since then more than 1,500 peer-reviewed studies have replicated these findings.

TK Staff Spotlight
Tracy Wolf Math Teacher, TK Academy
|
Here is a question that is often posed among friends: “If you won the mega lottery tomorrow, would you quit your job? “Absolutely,” is often the answer, offered without a moment’s hesitation.
We are fairly confident that Tracy would respond quite differently. After all, this is a woman who returned to work a mere two weeks after giving birth to her first child. Why? She said, “Because my students needed me; it was April and they could not go too much longer without a math teacher.”
Tracy is the Mathematics Classroom Teacher at TK Academy, Timberline’s on-campus school for adolescent residents.
From eighth grade on, Tracy both loved and was extremely good at math. In college, in particular, she challenged social norms in this arena. First, she was female; and second, she had highly refined social skills. Eventually, she graduated from Northern Illinois University with a degree in math.
From eighth grade on, Tracy both loved and was extremely good at math. In college, in particular, she challenged social norms in this arena. First, she was female; and second, she had highly refined social skills. Eventually, she graduated from Northern Illinois University with a degree in math.
To our extreme good fortune, Tracy came to Timberline Knolls immediately after graduation. Teaching at a school without all that is typically associated with secondary education—a football team, cheerleaders, and the like—took some adjustment, to say nothing of working with an all-female population that struggles with a wide range of disorders and addictions. October/November Devotion
By Todd Warren, Spirituality Coordinator
~ Preparation ~
“If one asks for success and prepares for failure, they will get the situation they have prepared for.”
—Florence Scovel Shinn
There are a lot of equations for success that pair preparation with opportunity. Some call it luck, and others call it coincidence, but really it’s just simple, responsible living. And whether it’s a miracle or an obvious result, success and opportunity always favor those who are ready and expectant.
In our process of healing, the primary purpose for personal preparedness is an enthusiastic, hope-filled life. If “despair is most often the offspring of ill-preparedness,” then a vigilant readiness for every good possibility is what will keep us positively leaning forward in faith. Life to its fullest… that’s what we want! A peaceful life, full of the happiness that comes from knowing we’re capable of being our unique selves and accomplishing those feats that only our distinctiveness can achieve.
Be diligent to make full use of the tools of preparation you are presently acquiring; together, they create the soil for success. They are the very things that attract opportunity, they are the ingredients for a life animated and fun!
PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Higher Power, thank you for giving me the wisdom to appreciate preparation. I want the fun life!
